V A N Z E I S T: CASA ALMERIA

In 2005 I designed CASA ALMERIA. A mixture of luxury, lifestyle, contemporary design. To the left is the main house, with large living areas, large open kitchen and a large underground garage/studio. To the right we have 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and when you open the doors in the morning it takes only a few steps to the swimmingpool. Connecting the two is a "deconstructivist" structure that also holds a staircase to the roof of the bedroomwing.

Oh, life can be such a drag...

Renaissance Man.

From being a medical trained pharmaceutical representative to becoming an architectural designer was a great journey. It started in 1994 in Groningen, the Netherlands, and after winning a generous Scholarship for the "outstanding quality of my studyresults" (as stated by the accompanying report...), I still had the best time to come in San Francisco. It was an opportunity not to be missed: as an adult, being in the position to do what had always been in the back of my mind, knowing that from that moment on I'd be a designer, whatever that could be.

In the 3rd year (1997) I had won the Scholarship, but also in an international design competition in Leipzig, Germany. With over 300 participants, for the first Anteprima Design Contest (1997) at the Leipziger Messe, it was an exciting time. One moment in Leipzig and the next I was in San Francisco.

At the California College of Arts I met 2 great people; Julia Turner and Raymond Saunders. I am grateful for our wonderful shared adventures.

Raymond made a big compliment that was to become an inspiration for the rest of my life as a designer. "Renaissance Man", he started to call me, with a big smile on his face. I knew he had listened to every word we discussed. From that moment on I heard it many times: "Hey, Renaissance Man". And with a great smile on my face I would continue my journey...
